About us

Sunflower Care e.V.

On 24 February 2022, Russia directly invaded Ukraine, and the lives of all disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent children and their caregivers in Ukraine have been in danger since then. Back in 2014, when the war started, many families had to leave their homes and look for shelter. Now they are going through the traumatic experience again.

We at Sunflower Care volunteer to help such families leave Ukraine if they decide to do so and find a safer place to live.

What we do

  • Look for barrier-free options of medical and casualty evacuation, such as intensive care and critical care transport, ambulances, or accessible vehicles.
  • Find out the family’s individual needs that might apply to accommodation, nutrition, and medication.
  • Help know the way around the German social and healthcare systems.
  • Assist in finding and getting assistive devices, e.g. wheelchairs, walking frames, that might be needed upon arrival.
  • Curate the family and help them cope with the official paperwork and bureaucracy (social security services, Immigration Office, etc.)
  • Provide the family with food, clothes, personal care items, meds if they need any.

Why do we do that?

We know perfectly that refugee camps in Germany don’t always meet even the basic requirements so that such a family could get by. That can pose a threat to the mental and physical health of disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent people or even put their lives at risk.

A lot of families hesitate and refuse to be evacuated. They fear being left without a home, medical or social care, assistive devices, necessary treatment, or even food for their children to eat.

For instance, refugees can’t always cook for themselves in a camp. Sometimes lactose- and gluten-free food is not available.

We regret to say that many people fleeing Ukraine have to face obstacles in the EU social system.

We at Sunflower Care look for solutions to overcome them.

We do our best to help disabled, chronically ill, neurodivergent children, teenagers and adults and their caregivers not to be excluded or marginalised.

We want them to have access to inclusive medicine, care, education, and leisure.

Working together, we can ensure support that is built on the needs and demands of disabled, chronically ill and neurodivergent people.
